My name is Denver Martin. As of now, I am a college student majoring in communications and digital studies. I mostly chose this major because I’m not really sure what I want to do after school. I switched majors many times (historic preservation to geography, art history to environmental science, and more) but ended up in communications because it seemed like a good catch-all. With communications and digital studies being such a broad category, it feels like anything is possible. Many classes in different subjects can fall under electives for this major. Because of this, I can take more time and figure out if I want to focus on one area of study or do bits and pieces of multiple things. For instance, last semester I took a music technology class and this semester I am taking a news journalism class and a cinema studies class. These are all completely different things but they all fall under communications and digital studies. With most other majors, I would be stuck doing only those majors’ classes. I don’t like to be stuck like that. One of my worst nightmares is being stuck with the same job doing the same thing for the rest of my life. I believe that this major allows me to be more versatile and it gives me more options.
Other than being a student, I am also a musician, music producer, D&D dungeon master and occasional player, chef, United Methodist, pro wrestling fan, rock and trinket collector, and radio DJ. The three main instruments I play are tuba (10 years), electric bass (7 years), and mandolin (5 years). I’ve also been playing handbells and chimes at church for 12 years. However, I can play almost any other instrument with astounding mediocrity, such as guitar, trombone, drums, flute, and many others. The one instrument I can’t seem to get the hang of is piano. I took lessons from my grandpa (a professional pianist) for a few years but I just couldn’t figure it out. Once I figure out how, I plan on uploading some of my music and some music I’ve helped produce and record on this website.
